Volunteering at a permaculture farm

From mid March to mid October we host volunteers that want to learn about a different lifestyle. We select adventurous people that are looking for alternatives to money-driven lifes.
They come to Bogata Šuma for 4 weeks or longer (maybe you want to stay "forever"!), and we teach them about a self sufficient, sustainable life, about the ways of nature and permaculture, about teaming up with nature to feed the earth, the soil, wildlife and ourselves.
We aim to inspire these people to life a simple, fulfilling life in the countryside, in harmony with nature.

As a volunteer we expect you to be part of our family and daily routines. That includes preparing meals, setting the table, doing the dishes, cleaning, sweeping the floor et cetera.

Accomodation

You can stay in a tent or in one of the two caravans (or in a room in the house in colder months).
Of course you keep your space clean and tidy. You are a guest; we're not your mother.
There is always a possibility that you have to share your space with another volunteer.

You can use the bathroom/toilet in the house and outdoor (camping) showers. Outdoors we have two compost toilets and please feel free to pee anywhere to donate your nitrogen to a tree/shrub.
Please bring environmental friendly & bio degradable soap & shampoo because everything eventually ends up in the garden.

Food

We provide you with breakfast, lunch and dinner. During the week we usually eat healthy, organic, vegetarian meals. In the weekends we like to cook with (home grown) meat or (local) fish. Of course eating meat is optional.
We usually bake & fry with lard/the grease (vitamin D!) from a local pig, or seed oil.

Every day we collect fresh vegetables from the garden. Mushrooms or nettles for a soup, eggs from our chickens, salad leaves...
We think it is important to eat healthy & varied from our terrain or from local, organic producers. We want to support local economy. And since this is a continental/Mediterranean climate, we don't grow bananas, coffee and chocolate. >> More on our ideas about food

In the kitchen we have a wood stove on which we prepare meals. If you don't cook, you can make & maintain the fire, do the dishes, sweep the floor.... Many hands make light work.

The family likes to have a private dinner once or twice a week (“family-time”). On this day you can cook for yourself (or with other volunteers) with the ingredients we provide.

Activities

The kind of work and the time we get up, are depending on the season. In the hottest summer period (temperatures up to 36 Celcius) we can get up at 6 in the morning. It is also possible that we have a lot of work to do on our computers, and we work with you only in the afternoons.

With volunteers we work around 6 hours a day, from Monday to Friday.
In the weekends you are free to do whatever. If you're making a trip, please keep in mind that you are responsible for your own logistics.

We regularly organise workshops on various subjects during spring, summer and fall months. You can join them for free.

Working in the garden

"Your way of life is an inspiration for me. The simplicity of it and the passion in it."
Jessica Clinton, New York >> more

Usually we start the day in the garden with weeding, sowing, planting and harvesting the meal of the day. When we’re done in the garden, we work on a job from our list, depending on our priorities and your interests and skills and what you want to learn. It could involve woodworking, wood-construction work, maintaining the terrain, working in the forest garden or in the orchard, or more garden work.

Personal development and learning in the crafts area is special interest of Peter. Creative construction with various materials is possible.
Barbara can teach you about permaculture and organic gardening, self sufficiency, companion planting, composting, her experiments with gardening with the moon calender, solar drying, making wine from various fruits, liqueur, various jams or anything else from our harvest, working with wool...

Please tell us about your skills and desires. What do you want to learn from us?

"A million times thank you for welcoming me into your family and beautiful home. I couldn't have askes for a better WWOOF experience. Your vision is amazing, your rich forest warmed my heart. Thank you for all the delicious meals, amazing conversations, laughter and all the ideas I am taking with me."
